A Winter Break in Northumberland:
Dark Skies, Quiet Trails and Time to Unwind
There's a particular kind of calm that settles over Northumberland in winter. The summer crowds have gone, the hills are dusted with frost and the nights are long, dark and full of stars. It's the perfect season to slow down.
If you're looking for a winter break in Northumberland, The Barn at East Salmons Well is a peaceful place to escape. Our luxury adults-only holiday let sits near the village of Acomb, about a mile from Hadrian's Wall and a mile and a half from the market town of Hexham. It's close enough to explore, yet far enough from the lights of towns and cities to enjoy some of the darkest skies in England.
Here's why winter is one of our favourite times of year at The Barn, and how to make the most of a winter stay.
Why Choose The Barn for a Winter Break?
Peace and quiet, guaranteed
The Barn is adults-only, so it's a genuinely restful place to stay. Whether you're after a quiet reset after the festive season, a long weekend for two or a relaxed getaway with friends, the atmosphere is calm from the moment you arrive.
A comfortable base to come home to
The Barn sleeps four adults in two en-suite bedrooms. The open-plan living, dining and kitchen space, with its oak floors and sage green shaker kitchen, is a lovely place to gather after a day outdoors. On bright winter days, the sliding doors look out onto the garden terrace and the Northumberland countryside beyond.
The perfect end to a winter's day
After a bracing walk along Hadrian's Wall, there's nothing better than a long soak in the roll-top bath by the window. Add a good book, something warming to drink and an early night, and you'll soon feel the benefit of a proper break.
Northumberland at its quietest
Winter is Northumberland's quiet season. Trails, villages and attractions are calmer, so you can enjoy the landscape at your own pace, often with barely another person in sight.
Dark Sky Breaks: Winter Stargazing in Northumberland
Winter is the best season of all for stargazing. The sun sets early, the nights are long, and cold, clear air often brings the sharpest views of the year.
Stars from the garden
On a clear night, step out onto The Barn's garden terrace, let your eyes adjust to the dark and look up. Winter is the season of Orion and the bright stars around him, and on the darkest nights you may see the soft band of the Milky Way stretching overhead.
England's darkest skies
Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, covering Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water and Forest Park, holds gold tier status and is one of the largest areas of protected night sky in Europe. It's a short drive from The Barn, and the county's observatories, including Kielder, Twice Brewed, Battlesteads, Stonehaugh and Allenheads, run guided stargazing evenings through the winter.
The Dark Skies Festival
Each year, usually in February, the North East Dark Skies Festival brings a programme of stargazing sessions, night walks, talks and astrophotography workshops to observatories and venues across Northumberland. It's a wonderful reason to plan a dark sky break in Northumberland.
A chance of the Northern Lights
On nights of strong solar activity, the aurora is occasionally seen from Northumberland. It's never guaranteed, but a clear winter night away from light pollution gives you the best possible chance.
Observatory events and festival dates change each year, so check the latest programme before you travel.
Hadrian's Wall in Winter
A World Heritage Site on your doorstep
With Hadrian's Wall about a mile from The Barn, you can step straight into nearly 2,000 years of history. In winter, the Roman frontier is at its most atmospheric: low sun across the crags, frost on the stones and wide, empty views to the north.
Walking the Wall
The central section of the Wall, west of The Barn, has some of the most dramatic scenery on the whole route, with the Wall rising and falling along the crags. Choose a short circular walk or a longer stretch of the Hadrian's Wall Path, and pack warm layers, waterproofs and sturdy boots, as the weather can change quickly on higher ground.
Roman forts and museums
Several of the Wall's Roman sites stay open through the winter, often with shorter hours. Vindolanda, with its excavated fort and remarkable museum, is a highlight on a crisp winter day, and The Sill, the National Landscape Discovery Centre, is a great place to learn about the landscape and warm up with a hot drink. Winter opening times vary, so check before you set off.
Winter Walks, Snowdrops and Day Trips
The Tyne Valley on foot
The countryside around Acomb and Hexham is beautiful in winter, with riverside paths, frosty farmland and woodland trails to explore. After a crisp walk, a cosy country inn with a warming drink is never far away.
Hexham in the quiet season
Just a mile and a half from The Barn, Hexham is perfect for a relaxed winter day. Visit the historic Abbey, browse the independent shops and settle into one of the welcoming cafés. The farmers' market, held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, is a great place to stock up on local produce for your stay.
Snowdrop season
From February, Northumberland's gardens begin to stir. Howick Hall Gardens, near the coast, is famous for its snowdrop walks through February and March, with drifts of white flowers carpeting the woodland. Closer to The Barn, Wallington's grounds and woodland walks are lovely on a bright winter afternoon.
A day on the coast
The Northumberland coast is around an hour's drive from The Barn. In winter, its wide sandy beaches and dramatic castles are wonderfully peaceful, making for a memorable day trip.
Wildlife in winter
Kielder Water and Forest Park is one of the best places in England to look for red squirrels, which are often easier to spot in winter when the trees are bare.
A Romantic Winter Break for Two
Winter and romance go hand in hand, and The Barn is made for couples. Spend your days exploring Hadrian's Wall and the Tyne Valley, then come back for a long soak in the roll-top bath, a relaxed dinner and an evening watching the stars from the garden.
Valentine's in Northumberland
Looking for somewhere special for Valentine's Day? A Valentine's break in Northumberland at The Barn offers something far more memorable than a busy restaurant. Book a table at one of the wonderful restaurants or cosy country inns in the nearby villages, or cook a special meal together in The Barn's kitchen. With the Dark Skies Festival often taking place in February, you might even round off the evening with a guided stargazing session.
Celebrate something special
From birthdays and anniversaries to simply having time together, a romantic winter break in Northumberland is a lovely way to mark the moment, without the crowds of the busier seasons.
